The NJ Gathering Inc. is committed to empowering the next generation of Black and Brown leaders by partnering with organizations who offer scholarship opportunities for high school seniors planning to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). We recognize the rich legacy of HBCUs in shaping excellence, pride, and purpose, and our goal is to support students who are ready to continue that legacy.

 

These scholarships provide financial assistance to help ease the transition from high school to college, while also offering access to valuable resources such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and college success tools. We are looking for students who demonstrate academic promise, leadership potential, and a passion for making a positive impact in their communities. Awards are based on the applicant’s academic performance, leadership qualities, and the strength of their application. By investing in your future now, we aim to help you thrive at your chosen HBCU and beyond.

The Dr. Leroy Cordero Floyd III MD Scholarship for Future Medical Professionals

Are you a graduating high school senior with a passion for healthcare? Do you dream of making a difference in medicine, nursing, or other health professions? ​The Leroy Cordero Floyd III MD Scholarship was established to support students committed to improving healthcare and advancing equity in medicine. This award is available to high school seniors who will be attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and who plan to pursue a career in the medical field. Eligibility Criteria Must be a graduating high school senior accepted to or current student attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Intend to pursue a degree in a medical or healthcare-related field (e.g., medicine, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences, allied health professions). Demonstrated community service, leadership, or volunteer experience. Financial need will be given preference. Scholarship Amount: $1,000

Derricke Dennis Communications Scholarship

Do you have a passion for storytelling?! The Derricke Dennis Scholarship was created to support students who want to major in Communications or Journalism with a dream to one day cover the big stories! Eligibility Criteria Must be a graduating high school senior accepted to or current student attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Intend to pursue a degree in Communications or Journalism. Must have at least ONE published news article / report, either print, online or broadcast. Scholarship Amount: $500

The HBCU Scholarship Ride Scholarship

The HBCU Scholarship Ride began in 2020, when founder Hassan Abdus-Sabur rallied a few fellow cyclists around a simple but powerful vision: ride from Newark to Washington D.C. to raise scholarship funds for graduating students from the City of Newark. What started as a bold ride of purpose quickly grew into a movement—uniting community, culture, and commitment. Since that first 225+ mile journey to Howard University, the Ride has raised thousands of dollars, empowered local students, and inspired a growing network of supporters who believe in investing in the next generation of HBCU leaders. Eligibility Criteria Must be a graduating high school senior from the City of Newark Must be attending an HBCU Scholarship Amount: $350 Book Scholarship

Rev. Stef & Jubilation Scholarship

When you hear the name Rev. Stefanie R. Minatee & Jubilation, you know there’s going to be JUBILATION in the house! Since its founding in 1998 under the auspices of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the culturally diverse choir has been devoted to preserving and celebrating African American sacred and Gospel music. Under Rev. Minatee’s direction, the group has performed around the world—including tours in Spain and Japan—and shared stages with icons such as Queen Latifah, Ray Charles, and Donnie McClurkin. Jubilation has appeared on American Idol Gives Back, Bobby Jones Gospel, and even at Super Bowl XLIV. Their recording with Queen Latifah on the GRAMMY-winning album Oh Happy Day and their own projects, including The Launch Out Project and Just Like Sunday Mornin’ showcase their signature blend of traditional, contemporary, and inspirational Gospel sounds. RSJ awards scholarships yearly to worthy students majoring in the Performing Arts and technology! Eligibility Criteria Must be a graduating high school senior accepted to or current student attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Intend to major in Performing Arts Scholarship Amount: $1,000

Richard & Jones Scholarship

The Richard & Jones Dream Builders Scholarship honors their dedication to education and service. The family has a long-standing tradition of supporting students who show academic excellence, leadership, and a desire to make a positive difference in their communities while attending a historically black college or university. The family recognizes that breaking barriers is possible, as they are 1st- and 2nd-generation HBCU graduates. The Richard & Jones Dream Builders Scholarship family believes that education is a powerful tool for change and has established this scholarship to help deserving students overcome financial obstacles and achieve their educational goals. This generosity reflects the belief in young people's potential to create a better future through hard work, determination, and integrity. From this scholarship, The Richard & Jones Dream Builders Scholarship family hopes to continue their legacy of giving back while empowering the recipient to pursue higher education and make meaningful contributions to society using any of the legacy schools listed below: ​Norfolk State University Virginia Union University Hampton University Scholarship Amount: $1,000

Philip Michael Clay II Scholarship

Philip Michael Clay II brings a dynamic blend of leadership, creative vision, and community-centered mentorship to The NJ Gathering. As a seasoned Business Intelligence Engineer and Product Manager, Michael has built a career at the intersection of innovation, storytelling, and data-driven impact. A proud graduate of Seton Hall University, Michael earned his Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Film and Graphic Design, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to visual storytelling and cultural expression. This passion led to the founding of Red 19 Films LLC, a content creation company specializing in videography and media production that amplifies authentic stories and elevates underrepresented voices.​​ From 2013 to 2019, Michael served as a high school coach and mentor to student-athletes, helping guide them in developing discipline, confidence, and pathways to higher education. His dedication to youth development and opportunity aligns closely with The NJ Gathering’s mission to inspire the next generation through education, music, and scholarship. Michael is deeply committed to ensuring that students are equipped with both the resources and inspiration to thrive. His combined experience in technology, media, and mentorship reflects a strong belief that culture, creativity, and education are powerful tools for meaningful and lasting impact. Scholarship Criteria: No minimum GPA Preferably a major in Film, Graphic Design, Broadcasting, Media Production or something closely related Example of something they have put together, worked on or would like to create and short blurb on what they ultimately would like to do with their major. Scholarship Amount: $1,000

Omorodion Sunny Omoigui Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of the late Omorodion Sunny Omoigui. He studied medical technology at Union County College and worked as a radiologist technician where he helped others in need. He always had a passion to return back to school to study medicine but sadly passed away before being able to do so. He currently has three children who hope to pursue medicine. Scholarship Criteria:​​​ Pursuing a career in S.T.E.M Scholarship Amount: $500.00

Walkers4Life Scholarship

The mission of the organization shall be to encourage community involvement and further public knowledge, resources and interest in the needs of all individuals who are impacted by cancer through advocacy,resources,community activities and educational efforts. Requirements: GPA: 2.5 Field of Study: Cancer Research Scholarship Amount: $500.00

Gissentanner Family Scholarship

Enell and Grace Gissentanner were parents who believed that with God's help, a college education would ensure a bright future for their children. Subsequently their two daughters completed master's and doctoral level degrees. This parental support established an academic foundation resulting in five of their grandchildren becoming college graduates, three of them attending HBCUs, namely Xavier University, Hampton University, and Howard University Law School. The Gissentanner Family Scholarship continues a legacy that emphasizes the lasting importance of education for future generations. Scholarship Criteria:​​​ Must be a graduating high school senior accepted to or current student attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale Scholarship Amount: $1,000.00
